The
plot
of
this
historic
play
at
Hjørungavåg
is
drawn
from
Norwegian
history
during
the
end
of
the
tenth
century.
Earl
Håkon
has
reigned
over
Norway
for
some
time
as
a
vassal
under
the
king
of
Denmark
but
when
the
king
invited
him
to
his
castle
and
forced
him
to
be
baptised
as
a
Christian
, Håkon
broke
off
his
connection
with
the
King.
Earl
Håkon
was
an
eager
worshipper
of
the
old
Norse
gods
and
after
the
break
Håkon
continued
as
a
ruler
of
Norway
,
but
now
there
was
hostility
between
him
and
the
King.

During
this
time
there
was
a
large
group
of
professional
warriors
who
lived
at
Jomsburg
on
the
island
of
Jom
in
the
Baltic
Sea
.
They
were
called
the
Vikings
of
Jom.
The
story
tells
of
viking
chieefs
such
as
, Jom
Earl
Sigvalde,
Bue
Digre, Vagn Åkeson
and
some
others
who
attended
å
feast
at
the
castle
of
the
Danish
King.
Under
the
influence
of
the
old
Norse
beer
,
the
mead,
they
made
a
vow
that
within
the
span
of
three
winters
they
would
go
to
Norway
with
å
large
army
and
kill
Earl
Håkon,
or
drive
him
out
of
the
country.
This
became
known
in
Norway
,
and
Earl
Håkon
and
his
son
Earl
Eirik
gathered
å
large
army
to
meet
the
Vikings
of
Jom.
The
two
armies
met
at
Hjørungavåg,
resulting
in
a
bloody
battle
,
